Art

Intent 

At Warley Primary School we aim to provide all children with a broad and balanced Art curriculum, which is fully inclusive and prepares them for life beyond primary education. Art stimulates imagination, creativity and promotes an appreciation of the world around us. It involves children in a range of visual, tactile and sensory experiences. This enables them to communicate what they see, think and feel through the use of the elements of colour, texture, form and pattern. 

Through our Art curriculum, we aim to encourage the enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and develop a knowledge of significant artists in their locality and globally. Our curriculum ensures the progressive development of knowledge and skills. It enables children to observe and record from first-hand experience and from their imagination. It develops the children’s competence in controlling materials and tools as well as broadening their awareness of art from different eras and cultures.  

Implementation

To guarantee high standards of teaching and learning in Art, we have planned a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Art is taught focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum and each year group has three separate topics, which are taught in the second half of each term. Teachers are provided with planned schemes of work for their topics, however are encouraged to adapt the planning where necessary and according to the needs of their pupils.

Each topic has been carefully selected for each year group to ensure there is a build-up of knowledge and skills as the children move their way through the school. Teachers are aware of our children’s cultural capital and we ensure there are opportunities in Art to allow children to become confident in their ability but also push their boundaries, allowing them to explore new techniques, tools or materials. 

We provide a variety of opportunities for learning in Art to take place inside and outside the classroom such as Art themed whole-school curriculum days as well as educational visits or visitors linked to Art topics for example Street Art graffiti workshop.

Impact

 Evidence of learning and progression in Art lessons can be found in children’s Art/DT Sketch books. These books document children’s learning for every Art topic, as they have moved through the school. We also showcase the children’s learning through Art displays around the school and evidence of learning about a topic, within each classroom.  

We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

• Evidence of learning in Art/DT Sketch books – appreciation of an artist’s work or stimulus, exploration of media, tools and techniques, finished art work.
• Photographs of the children’s practical learning.
• Class Art displays of a scheme of work.
• Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).
• Staff meetings to discuss the impact of each scheme of work.
• Ongoing assessment through our whole-school assessment tool, Target Tracker and analysis of end of year data for each year group.
